Freezers: out of sight, out of mind, and eating electricity
Posted by Cathy Debenham on 12 December 2011 at 9:49 am
'Now here is a serious energy saver,' writes David Ham, one of our shortlisted contributors. 'For years we have run without question - out of sight out of mind - two modestly sized freezers purchased probably 15 years ago. Over the summer with no heating on I questioned why our utility room always seemed warm. Then I plugged in my energy monitor to both freezers and - you have guessed it - consumption 28 kWhs per week or nearly 1,500 per annum. A new A+ rated freezer of similar volume is quoted at less than 300 kWhs per annum. New freezer obtained - 1,200 kWhs per annum saved for an investment of less than £250. Now how much was that Solar PV system?

Great result!
Even craftier, I set about defrosting our ancient freezer and realized that I had fitted the entire contents while I did so into the freezer compartment over our fridge - which is actually all we need! bye bye freezer, and this cost nothing at all.
