Cavity wall insulation and uPVCdouble glazing using Pilington K glass installed in 1994. Low energy lightbulbs throughout the house and in 2006 intalled 2 solar thermal panels. Installed Solar PV in Nov 2010 with 3.01 Kwp (14 panels)
Considering our house is 4 bed detatched I am very happy with the measure I have taken to rduce both our carbon footprint and running costs. Early days with the solar PV but already seeing the benefits. Still a daily battle with the thermostatt in the hall which regularly moves itself up from 20 a couple of degrees!!
Retired teacher. Was I/C Outdoor Education and unit Leader for the DofE at School. Still volunteering with the DofE running canoeing expeditions. Always had an interest in energy efficiency and renewables.
We did investigate Solar PV and biomass boilers in 2006 as well as solar thermal but decided to go with solar thermal and took advantage of the grant to reduce the installation costs. Very happy with the two panels and getting free hot water in the summer. Biomass and solar PV at the time were not going to reduce our energy costs so installed a more efficient condensing gas boiler instead. Now the Gov has introduced the feed-in tariffs we decided to go with Solar PV as a long term investment.
