Currently we have solar panels installed and they provide both electricity and thermal heating to our home. Directly in case of the solar thermal but also we run electric radiators from the solar panels too which works out nicely. However, it's not quite enough to run completely off grid, especially in the winter months.
Hopefully with the rapid pace of technology in this field we can improve our energy production and storage with the view to becoming entirely sustainable from renewable energies. At the very least, we aim to improve our current setup to allow a greater production of electricity which we will then use to heat and power our home.
One of the biggest obstacles to this is generating enough during the winter months, or to having the capacity to generate excess during the summer and store it for long term use during the winter.
With this extra energy capacity we could power our electric radiators all through the winter, presuming they are efficient enough which should prove to be the case.
On a similar note, we do have a very small wind turbine out the back however it could certainly do with improvement as it does little more than run a few lights at the moment.
Another project that we'd like to explore is that we have access to a mid size stream running down from the hills. Whilst i'm not entirely sure what our options are with regards to this, i'm sure we could generate some energy from it to help power our electricity and heating year around. So that is certainly something we'd like to explore more.
Having spent most of my working life in the field of heating engineering, i'm now settling down with my partner to build our very own sustainable dream home. Currently living with him and Mr.Bojangles, our extremely grumpy cat who loves curling up in front of the fire with us.
