A major home renovation in 2012 saw us replacing the old electrical storage heaters with an air source heat pump linked to underfloor heating. The warmth generated was wonderful - the size of the electricity bills, not so much! We improved our insulation, replaced a couple of old windows and doors - and worked out how to use the incredibly complex Daikin heatpump - and are now enjoying a warm home with total energy bills of £90 a month. Lesson in the importance of good insulation when using a heat pump, learnt!
I am a content writer here at YouGen, focussing mainly on the Green Deal but interested in all aspects of energy saving and renewable energy. A voluntary exile from mad, bad London to a quiet and beautiful corner of east Northamptonshire, I work from a home office, warmed by an air source heatpump.
Insulation, insulation, insulation. Before investing in costly heat or energy saving technologies, spend your money on measures to bust draughts and keep heat in. You'll be amazed at the difference it makes.
