We've got a woodburner with boilers and solar thermal. No other source of heating is needed.
We've also insulated the cavity walls and loft, while double glazing and draughtproofing was already installed.
We've also installed 1250W of solar PV, which powers an off-grid battery system. This can supply DC or 240V, and works when there's a power cut.
I work for a charity promoting renewable energy (the Ashden http://www.ashden.org).
My wife and I own a few acres of woodland, from which we supply all the logs we need for home heating. You can read about it on my blog: http://peplers.blogspot.com
1. Read up on "peak oil" - if you don't care about climate change, then this is different reason to save energy.
2. Always go for the simplest energy/heating system that will do the job you need. Complexity brings costs and reliability risks.
